Material name: Brown Stair – Montessori Brown Stair
Area: Sensorial
Purpose & developmental benefits:
The Brown Stair helps children distinguish size in two dimensions (width and height) by arranging rectangular prisms from thinnest to thickest. This material supports the development of visual discrimination, comparison, and spatial reasoning, while also encouraging precision and concentration through careful manipulation.
Skills children develop:
-
Distinguish size in two dimensions
-
Develop fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination
-
Strengthen observation, comparison, and self-correction skills
-
Increase concentration and a sense of order in work
-
Provide indirect preparation for mathematics and geometry
Recommended age: 3–6 years old (Casa)
It may be introduced earlier once the child is comfortable working on a mat and engaging in basic orderly activities.
Materials & components:
-
A set of 10 rectangular prisms of equal length with gradually increasing cross-sections
-
Uniform brown color to isolate the concept of size
-
Natural wood with smooth surfaces and rounded edges for safety
-
Proportions standardized according to Montessori principles
Control of error:
When arranged incorrectly, the “stair” appears uneven, making it easy for the child to notice and self-correct.
Use in the classroom / at home:
Used on a mat in the Sensorial area. The teacher or parent presents the lesson using the three-period lesson: carrying the tray, laying out the mat, and arranging the prisms by thickness. Children may practice independently each day, with language enrichment such as “thickest” and “thinnest.” At home, place the material on a low shelf in a well-lit area and avoid presenting too many similar materials at once to support maximum focus and concentration.
