Material Name: Fabric Boxes – Montessori Fabric Boxes
Curriculum Area: Sensorial (Tactile Sense)
Purpose & Developmental Benefits
The Fabric Boxes help children discriminate and compare different types of fabric through tactile exploration. By touching, feeling, and matching fabric pieces, children perceive differences in softness, roughness, smoothness, thickness, and texture. This work refines the tactile sense and strengthens the child’s ability to observe and compare using touch rather than relying on vision.

Classroom & Home Use
Used in the Sensorial (Tactile Sense) area on a table or mat. Children are encouraged to wash their hands or sensitize their fingertips before beginning. Activities may include:
-
Matching identical fabric pieces by touch
-
Matching fabrics with strong contrasts (Box 1 – easier)
-
Matching fabrics with more subtle differences (Box 2 – more challenging)
-
Sorting fabrics according to tactile characteristics
-
Playing games such as “find the matching piece” with eyes closed or while blindfolded
The work may be extended by naming the materials and inviting children to find objects made of similar fabrics in the environment.
