Material name: Cylinder Blocks – Montessori Cylinder Blocks
Area: Sensorial
Purpose & developmental benefits:
The Cylinder Blocks are a classic Montessori sensorial material that help children distinguish size through variations in diameter and height by removing and replacing the cylinders into their corresponding sockets. While working with the Cylinder Blocks, children use vision, touch, and fine motor control to compare, judge, and self-correct errors. This process supports the development of concentration and foundational logical thinking.
Skills children develop:
-
Distinguish big–small, tall–short, thick–thin
-
Develop fine motor skills and hand control
-
Strengthen observation, comparison, and reasoning skills
-
Increase concentration span and independent work habits
-
Provide indirect preparation for mathematics and writing
Recommended age: 2.5–6 years old
(Usually one of the first sensorial materials introduced in the Casa classroom.)
Materials & components:
The set consists of four separate wooden blocks, each containing ten wooden cylinders with knobs.
-
Block 1: Cylinders decrease in diameter while height remains constant.
-
Block 2: Cylinders increase in height while diameter remains constant.
-
Block 3: Cylinders increase in both diameter and height.
-
Block 4: Cylinders increase in diameter while height decreases.
The precisely fitted sockets provide natural control of error: if a cylinder is placed incorrectly, it will visibly protrude or not fit.
Use in the classroom / at home:
Used on a table or mat in the Sensorial area. Children are shown how to remove and replace the cylinders using a three-finger grip, arrange them in order, and check their work visually and tactually. Extensions may include a “memory game” (replacing cylinders with eyes closed) or language enrichment such as “largest/smallest” and “tallest/shortest.” At home, it is recommended to present one block at a time rather than multiple materials at once to support focus and concentration.
