Material Name: Sound Cylinders – Montessori Sound Cylinders
Curriculum Area: Sensorial (Auditory Sense)
Purpose & Developmental Benefits
The Sound Cylinders help children discriminate and refine their auditory sense through listening, comparing, and matching sounds of varying intensities. By gently shaking the cylinders and focusing on the sounds produced, children learn to recognize differences in volume—from soft to loud—developing purposeful listening, which is a vital foundation for language, music, and later academic learning.
Skills Developed
-
Discriminating and comparing sounds by volume (soft to loud)
-
Matching cylinders that produce the same sound using hearing alone
-
Ordering sounds in a gradation from very soft to very loud
-
Strengthening concentration, purposeful listening, and auditory memory
-
Refining fine motor control through gentle, even shaking
-
Expanding descriptive language related to sound: soft, loud, softer, louder, quiet, sharp
Recommended Age
Material & Construction
The material consists of two wooden boxes (one with a red lid and one with a blue lid), each containing six sealed wooden cylinders (12 cylinders total).
All cylinders are identical in shape and appearance but differ in the materials inside, producing six graded sound intensities. Each red cylinder has a corresponding blue cylinder that produces the same sound, allowing the child to match pairs by hearing alone.
Classroom & Home Use
Children bring both boxes to a mat or table and gently shake each cylinder close to the ear using controlled, even movements. They then listen carefully to find and match cylinders with the same sound from the two boxes.
Once familiar, children may mix all the cylinders to match pairs or arrange them in order from softest to loudest. The activity should be done in a quiet environment so that subtle differences in sound can be clearly heard.
