Material name: Bells Keyboards (Montessori Bells Keyboards)
Area: Sensorial & Music
Purpose & developmental benefits:
Bells Keyboards are used in conjunction with the Montessori Bells Set to help children understand the relationship between pitch and its spatial and symbolic placement in music. By placing each bell onto its corresponding position on the keyboard, children gradually perceive the linear order of sound (from low to high) and how music is organized in space. This material represents an important transition from listening to and ordering sounds toward reading and understanding musical notation, in keeping with Montessori principles.
Skills supported:
-
Strengthens the ability to recognize and order pitches sequentially
-
Builds understanding of the relationship between sound, position, and musical symbols
-
Develops sequential, logical, and spatial thinking in music
-
Encourages sustained concentration and systematic work
-
Prepares children for reading the musical staff and more abstract musical activities
Recommended age:
Material & design:
-
A flat keyboard board made of wood or other durable material, designed to hold the bells
-
Clearly defined positions corresponding to pitch order and note sequence
-
Sized for use on a table or work mat
-
Clear layout supporting self-correction when bells are placed incorrectly
Use in the classroom / at home:
Used in the Music area together with the Montessori Bells Set. Children place each bell on the keyboard according to pitch order, listening carefully and comparing sounds as they move the bells. Teachers guide children to connect sound with spatial position and musical staff placement, often using the Three-Period Lesson.
At home, this material is suitable for children already familiar with the Bells and for environments that are quiet and supportive of focused listening and orderly work.
